Narrative Structure

Narrative is used in music videos to entertain or explain the lyrics that have been used in the music.

Narrative Terms

  • Intertextuality - how it relates to other media texts
  • Goodwin's Theory - based on 8 principles, it makes links between lyrics and visuals, genre characteristics, intertextuality reference, notions of looking, voyeurism, demands of the record label and performance, concept or narrative based videos.
  • Story/Todorov's Theory - based on a 3 part structure, Equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
  • Linear - Whether the story follows through in a logical order.
  • Non - Linear - When the story works in a backwards/ non logical order.
  • Protagonist - Main character.
  • Antagonist - A rival or opposition to the Protagonist.
  • Video examples of Narrative techniques:

    Lady Gaga - Telephone this video shows a Protagonist (Lady Gaga) and then a Antagonist which could be the police that are after her.



    Coldplay - Scientists The Coldplay video shows the video in a non- linear way as it plays the video in reverse.
