Initial Digipack Research

I liked the CD cover of Pinks - Funhouse album, its fun and interesting to look at. I thought that maybe as we are including a Pier/funfair element to our video that, I could recreate a similar sort of cover. I could use iconic fun fair rides, or games that we can photograph when we are on set.

Most of the CD covers that I have found have lots of photos of the actual artist on either the cover or CD itself. Therefore, I think that to make it look more professional that I could maybe do a mini photo shoot with Michaela so that I could use the images of her on the digipack.

As I was listening to this song on my iPod, I realised that this style could be really good for my own Digipack that i need to create. As I also take A-level art, I want to be really creative when designing my digipack, and I love this pop art style. I think that it creates a really vibrant cover and would really stand out.

The image on the top left could apply to our video concept or song as it is called ‘Teenage Dream’. Therefore the comic strip thinking/dreaming bubble could reflect the lyrics or video.

Narrative Theory

Below I have posted the document I on Narrative Theory which includes some theorist that I can use in my exam:

Narrative theory notes

Narrative Structure

Narrative is used in music videos to entertain or explain the lyrics that have been used in the music.

Narrative Terms

  • Intertextuality - how it relates to other media texts
  • Goodwin's Theory - based on 8 principles, it makes links between lyrics and visuals, genre characteristics, intertextuality reference, notions of looking, voyeurism, demands of the record label and performance, concept or narrative based videos.
  • Story/Todorov's Theory - based on a 3 part structure, Equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
  • Linear - Whether the story follows through in a logical order.
  • Non - Linear - When the story works in a backwards/ non logical order.
  • Protagonist - Main character.
  • Antagonist - A rival or opposition to the Protagonist.
  • Video examples of Narrative techniques:

Lady Gaga - Telephone this video shows a Protagonist (Lady Gaga) and then a Antagonist which could be the police that are after her.

Coldplay - Scientists The Coldplay video shows the video in a non- linear way as it plays the video in reverse.

    Shot Ideas

From the same footage we used to create the lip syncing video, we also decided to create a short video that was of all the different possible shots that we want to use in our video. One of my favourite shots is the spiral shot when the camera moves around Michaela.
We wanted to use this shot when the she sings and holds the lyrics 'you'. By having this shot here we wanted it to represent Michaela's realisation that she has imagined everything and that it symbolises her mind spiraling out of control with confusion.

    Lip Syncing

Below is the video that we have created of Michaela lip syncing to our song 'Teenage Dream.'
We decided to make this video in order for us to practice certain shots that we wanted to use in our actual video such as, the close up shots of half of her face and the spiral shot.

We discovered that in order for the lip syncing to look more believable or 'real' that we should get Michaela to actual sing or say the words out loud that way her mouth will move better and look more believable.

Also, we felt that we should change her emotion or the way that she is lip syncing the words, rather than having her happy or lip syncing normally the whole way through we should see Michaela become more angry or confused towards the end when she realises that she has imagined this whole relationship between them.
